The Renovation Planning Checklist
A renovation runs more smoothly when decisions are made in sequence. Use this checklist to turn an idea into a brief that a contractor can inspect, price and schedule.
Define the outcome
List the rooms, exterior areas or systems involved and describe how the finished space should work. Record accessibility, storage, energy, ventilation and maintenance goals alongside inspiration images.
Document the home
Take measurements and photos of existing conditions. Note known leaks or repairs, electrical and plumbing locations, heating and ventilation equipment, property access, condo rules and any available drawings or surveys.
Set a realistic project framework
Choose a working budget, identify undecided allowances and allow time for design, approvals, ordering and inspections. Plan for occupants, pets, belongings and a contingency for concealed conditions.
Prepare for permits and quotes
Ask the municipal building department or a qualified professional which approvals apply. Send every contractor the same brief and request a written scope, materials, exclusions, payment schedule, insurance details and change-order process.
