How to Hire a Contractor in Canada
A good hiring decision starts before the first quote. Define the work, compare like-for-like proposals, and confirm who is responsible for permits, materials and cleanup.
Start with a clear project brief
Write down the areas involved, the outcomes you want, approximate dimensions, access constraints and your preferred completion window. Separate must-haves from optional upgrades so contractors can price the same scope.
Compare qualified contractors
Ask about relevant experience, references for similar work, current insurance and the legal business name that will appear on the agreement. Registration and licensing requirements vary by trade and province, so confirm them with the relevant authority.
Read the quote and contract together
Compare the work, materials or allowances, schedule assumptions, taxes, payment milestones and exclusions. Put the agreed scope, permit responsibilities, warranty terms, cleanup and change-order process in writing before work starts.
Use a payment plan tied to progress
Keep copies of the contract, invoices, receipts, permits and change orders. Do not make the final payment until the agreed work is complete, deficiencies are documented and you understand the warranty process.
